Which way you're going
West — the Midlands, the North West and Wales
Across the M1 and M6 · M1 / M6 / A50
Shorter runs and heavier traffic. This is the direction with the most work moves on it and the one where the journey is most likely to be the least interesting part of the day.

What this direction is like
The distances are modest and the congestion is not. The corridor across to the M6 and up towards Manchester carries a great deal of traffic, and the practical consequence is that the departure time matters more than on any other direction.
It is the most common direction for a job move rather than a life move, which means the timetable is frequently set by a start date rather than by a completion, and it is often tighter.
Because the distance is manageable, this is the direction where doing the move in two parts genuinely works — a first run with the bulk, a second with the rest, without a huge cost penalty.
Birmingham and Manchester arrivals bring city constraints of their own: clearways, bus lanes, blocks with booking requirements, and the occasional street where a large vehicle simply will not go.
Into Wales the character changes again. Beyond the main routes the roads narrow and rural access becomes the constraint rather than traffic.
What we do about it
Plan the departure around the corridor rather than around the clock
Offer a split run where the distance makes it sensible, rather than forcing everything into one load
Check city-centre access and permitted routes at the receiving end
Tell you plainly where a large vehicle will not reach, particularly in rural Wales
Watch for
Underestimating the traffic because the distance is small. This is the direction where a move most often overruns for reasons that have nothing to do with the house.
