Why direction rather than town
Because it predicts the job, and because it is how people actually think about it. Somebody moving from Beeston to London and somebody moving from Retford to London have nearly the same move. Somebody moving from Beeston to Skegness has a completely different one.
The direction decides the road, the traffic, the property market you are arriving into and, very often, the reason for the move. Organising by town tells you almost none of that.
The far end is where it goes wrong
People worry about the distance and the distance is the reliable part. A motorway is a motorway. What varies enormously is what happens when the vehicle arrives — where it can stand, who has to give permission, whether the property is smaller, what the last stretch of lane is like.
Every difficult long move we have done has been difficult at the far end, and almost always because something there was assumed rather than established. So we establish it: in person where we can get to it, and properly rather than optimistically where we cannot.
What we will tell you plainly
That the sofa will not fit, before we load it rather than after we have driven it a very long way. That your dates need a dedicated vehicle rather than a shared load, or that they do not and you should take the cheaper option. That a delivery window has to be loose because of where you are going and what time of year it is.
And that we are probably not the right firm for a move across town. There are removals companies in Nottingham and Mansfield whose whole operation is built for local work, and for a move from Arnold to Carlton you will get a better job from one of them.
Both directions
Nottinghamshire receives as well as sends. People come back to family, or leave the South East for something larger, and we run the same four directions in reverse with the same survey of both ends.
