Questions
Everything we get asked
Including the one about whether we are the right firm for a move across town, which we answer honestly.
Long moves
Do you do the whole thing in a day, or over two?
It depends on the direction and on both ends, and we will tell you which we are proposing before you book rather than after. Going west the distances are modest enough that a single run is usually right. Going north beyond the central belt it frequently is not.
What we will not do is promise a single run and then discover on the day that it was never going to work.
Is a part-load cheaper?
For a long move, usually yes, and for a great many of these it is the sensible answer. A shared load runs to a schedule rather than on demand, so there is less flexibility on dates in exchange for a lower cost.
If your dates are fixed by a completion, a dedicated vehicle is generally the better answer even though it costs more.
Can you store things if there is a gap?
Yes, and long moves produce gaps more often than local ones because two chains in two different markets rarely line up neatly. Goods are sealed once, listed, and delivered when there are keys.
Do you go in the other direction too?
Yes. Nottinghamshire receives as well as sends, and we run the same directions in reverse — people coming back to family, or leaving the South East for something larger. Same quoting, same survey of both ends.
The far end
How do you know what the far end is like?
We survey it where we can get to it, and where we cannot we establish it properly rather than assuming — the standing position, the access, the parking rules, the route in and who has to give permission.
That is the part of a long move that goes wrong, and it goes wrong because somebody assumed it would work like the end they could see.
Will we need a parking bay suspension in London?
Very likely, and it has to be applied for in advance with the relevant borough. It is the single most common reason a southbound move starts badly.
We will tell you at the survey whether you need one and what it involves, in time to actually get one.
Our new place is much smaller.
Common going south, and much better established before we load than after we unload. We measure the receiving property — walls, doorways, turns and built-in storage — and tell you plainly what will not go.
It is far cheaper to decide about something in Nottinghamshire than to pay to move it somewhere it does not fit.
The new house is down a narrow lane.
Then we check that lane rather than trusting a route planner, which will confidently send a large vehicle down something it should not.
Where it genuinely will not take one, we shuttle in with something smaller. That belongs in the quote rather than in a conversation at the end of a long drive.
Nottinghamshire
Where in the county do you collect from?
Across it: Nottingham and the suburbs, West Bridgford, Beeston, Arnold, Carlton and Hucknall; Mansfield and the Ashfields; Worksop, Retford and the north; Newark, Southwell and Bingham in the east.
If you are just over a county boundary, ask anyway — the boundary matters much less than the direction you are going.
Do you do local moves within the county?
We do them, but they are not what this firm is set up for, and there are firms in Nottingham and Mansfield whose whole operation is built around local work. For a move across town you will probably get a better job from one of them.
What we are good at is the long one.
Why organise by direction rather than by town?
Because it predicts the job better and it is how people actually think about it. Somebody moving from Beeston to London and somebody moving from Retford to London have nearly the same move; somebody moving from Beeston to Skegness has a completely different one.
The direction decides the road, the arrival, and usually the reason for the move.
Practical
Do you pack?
A full pack, a part pack of the fragile and awkward things only, or materials dropped off. On a long run a proper pack matters more than it does across town, because everything spends much longer in motion.
What time do you start?
Earlier than a local move, and the exact answer depends on the direction — the westward corridor in particular is decided by traffic rather than by distance. We will agree it with you rather than announcing it.
What will you not carry?
Cash, jewellery, deeds and passports; controlled drugs; firearms and ammunition; fuels, gas bottles, fireworks and other hazardous goods; perishable food; plants that may carry pests; and living animals.
How much notice do you need?
More than a local move. The things that genuinely take time are a bay suspension at the far end, a managing agent’s permission, and a slot on a shared load if you are using one.
We hold provisional dates at no cost while a chain settles.

Tell us where you are going
Both addresses, and roughly when. On a long move the second address is the one that shapes the day, so the more you can tell us about it the better the quote will be.
